Most infrastructure is not designed. It accumulates, one urgent purchase at a time, until nobody can draw the whole picture. The symptoms appear gradually, so they're easy to normalize.
The warning signs
If several of these sound familiar, it's time for an assessment:
- Outages you only hear about from users
- Hardware or software past vendor end-of-support
- Backups that have never been test-restored
- Wi-Fi complaints in specific rooms or at peak times
- No up-to-date network diagram or asset list
- Support costs rising faster than headcount
- New sites or users take weeks to bring online
Where to start
Begin with visibility: an inventory, a health check and a risk register. Modernization then becomes a prioritized roadmap rather than a single expensive project.
